JC Penney's new sexist men's clothing ad (video)

After their "I'm Too Pretty To Do My Homework" T-shirt snafu, JC Penney has made another fashion flub with a new sexist television ad. In an attempt to get men interested in shopping, the mass retailer uses a split-screen technique to display current fall clothing on one side, and the iconic scene of Phoebe Cates emerging from a swimming pool in 1982's "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" on the other. Seriously? This is even worse than the completely archaic method of placing hot babes on the hood of a car to sell automobiles. We're annoyed at the blatant sexism exhibited, but we're more appalled at the utter stupidity of this ad. Way to underestimate your customers, JC Penney. The commercial is called "Everybody Wins," but you failed miserably.

Also, when we were able to focus on the Van Heusen clothing we saw a terrible shirt, tie, and blue jeans combo. Is this ad promoting casual Fridays? Bad fashion from the early '90s? Double fail.

THAT is one of the most memorable moments in ANY film from the 80s.

Van Heusen shirts are good too, but not as good as the scene that comes directly after what is shown in the commercial.

...and I am sure the author of the article didn't bother to check, but if you all remember, THIS WAS AN ADOLESCENT BOY'S FANTASY SCENE!

dont you think that this is just a spoof on what your whining about?i think that was the whole point of the commercial.... another idiot yahoo writer

Plus, I didn't hear anyone whining when Matthew McConaghey took off his shirt for no particular reason in some ad . . .

Bill N, you're right on. The best way to stop sexism, is to victimizing yourself, and showing respect for men. Instead, women cry about being discriminated against only when it suits them, but turn a blind eye when it is their husbands, brothers, and sons that are slandered. As a woman, it makes me sick.

Geez, talk about overaction. Human behaviour has not changed in thousands of years; people lie, cheat, steal and kill for greed of power, wealth or sex. Why is it such a surprise that men still likes looking at beautiful women in bikinis?

Are people going around looking for things to get mad over these days? And then put time and effort into writing about it! Jeepers...I think you better leave that and spend some time looking for some meaning in your life and stop complaining about this silliness. It is a sin really...

      Brad Hamilton: You need money.
Jeff Spicoli: All I need are some tasty waves, a cool buzz, and I'm fine.

Sex will always sell. No matter what. What about when Pamela Anderson's "Try Vegetarianism" picture where she's in a lettuce bikini? Sex to sell vegetarianism? I think so, and what's the big deal? I'm a woman and this doesn't offend me, because I find the people who complain about stuff like this are so quick to forget about it when it's gorgeous men on the other side, using their good looks to sell us things. It's OK to get up in arms about this saying it's sexist, but so many women won't say a thing if this was an ad for women's clothing, and on the other side was a shirtless Joe Manganiello strutting his stuff to sell you a damn blouse.

Pheobe Cates getting out of the pool in Fast Times at Ridgemont High brings back great memories. She was about 19 then (1982), I wonder if the younger men watching that clip realize that she is in her late forties now.

Was that supposed to be advertising something? All I saw was a memory from my youth in a red bikini.

It's not so much offensive as it is tiresome. Using sex to sell products is such an over-used cop out because it's so easy and obvious. I am far more likely to talk about a commercial that catches my attention for its thought provocation or its wit than because of the sex appeal.

I guess the article was an excuse to prominantly feature Phoebe Cates coming out of the pool on the Yahoo home page.

If it were an ad for womens clothing with a hot guy walking towards the camera would there be any controversy?
    • Kate  •  4 months ago
This is ridiculous. Not every woman gets offended by things like this, so stop putting a big "WE" in every article that is published here, Yahoo, and feel as though you've somehow earned the right to speak for others.
