Another controversial T-shirt hits the racks

(Image via screengrab from Forever 21.com)The latest ridiculous T-shirt to hit the market comes courtesy of Forever 21.

Spotted by Reddit user grillmeacheese who snapped a pic of it, the shirt for girls has been making waves throughout the Internet over its controversial printed message “Allergic to Algebra.”

This comes just a few weeks after JC Penney came under fire for its “I’m too pretty to do my homework so my brother has to do it” shirt, which the company pulled from its site after customers complained.

One can’t help but wonder: are statement pieces like these perpetuating the decline of women’s interest in the math and science fields, or are they a symptom of it and being produced because girls are showing less interest in academics?

In Ontario, students from both genders are falling behind in math scores, according to the latest batch of the province’s EQAO tests, designed to measure students' math and literacy levels.

If the public reacts with outrage every time one of these novelty tees makes it way to market, why are retailers still churning them out? Who is buying this stuff, and why aren’t fashion retailers taking girls' education more seriously?

If you try to view the offending algebra shirt on Forever 21’s website, the product link goes to a dead page. However, we were able to find an image of the product on the site via a search for the term “algebra”, but it's since been removed. It does not appear the shirt is for sale in Canada, according to Forever 21’s Canadian website.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports that the company has yet to respond to media inquires about the garment.

Attached to the shirt grillmeacheese snapped the photo of was a post-it note that read: “Smart girls are cool, don’t buy this top”.

We can only hope that young girls and their parents take that message to heart, and not the one printed on the T-shirt.

This has got to be the dumbest article I've read in a while. It's a shirt for crying out loud! When I read the title of the article, I thought the shirt had something vulgar or distasteful or offensive on it. 'Allergic to algebra' doesn't mean anything, it doesn't imply girls are stupid, nor do I think it reflects a decline of interest in math. There are thousands upon thousands of shirts with funny, quirky or whatever else messages on them; some are offensive, or consists of crude humour, or may give off a bad impression of the person wearing it (e.g. 'I'm a naughty girl') but all the rest are just...shirts. Funny, cute shirts. I'm 20 and doing an MSc. in Banking and Finance, my undergrad was in Economics and Management. I had/have to do a lot of math and guess what? I don't like it. Few are those who actually like math and it doesn't make the rest of us look stupid. I would wear a shirt like that, and I know that no one would look at me and think I'm stupid (really, who would actually take such a shirt to heart?). It's just a cute shirt that says 'hey, math sucks'. And yes, it does.

It just a shirt. I wear one with an 'illuminati' sign on it doesn't mean I'm part of it. Its a slogan! This is clearly middle class mothers with nothing else better to do with their time.

A lot of people can't stand algebra, regardless of their gender. It's an amusing play on words. Do people really need to make such a fuss about it, just because it happens to be catered to feminine tastes?

It would be fine.. if they just spelled it wrong too. :)

Allergic To Al-Qaeda, T-shirt would of been a great seller!

As sure as someone will make that t-shirt, someone will look for a "cause" against it. Capitalism at it's best. Now a fairly average shirt will sell off the shelves because it's badass.

this is not about the t-shirt...it's about the fact that women are being categorized as stupid and I don't know any woman on earth who could possibly enjoy being called stupid (even the truly stupid ones don't like being called stupid).

If a boy had been modelling this t-shirt there would have been no controversy. Most 11-16 year olds of either sex are allergic to Algebra.

My advice is to change the way we think about things and look at things, this shouldn't offend anyone.

They really have to stop suggesting these sorts of things about how smart women are. Just because a girl is pretty doesn't mean she can't be smart too!

I don't like math, but a t-shirt is not gonna make me fail all subjects. I will NEVER like math, even if you give me 10 billion dollars. What's wrong about not liking a subject? We all talk about it, don't we? Does that mean we have to stop talking about our dislikes?

What's next? People banning us from commenting about how bad our hair looks at times, because others might go bald? Geez.........

Who cares? The world is full of stupid tees. This isn't the first or the last...is it seriously that big of a deal???? As parents, it's up to us to make sure that our kids do their homework, stupid tees or not. Geez!!! If a tee affects the outcome of parenting skills, than something is seriously a-miss...

Teeshirts should read: Girls are the best sex on earth. Girls are Doctors. Girls are Engineers. Girls are Pharmacists. Girls are Executives. Girls are Athletes.....and above all Girls are Humorless and Boring.

Yeah seriously? I personally hate calculus... I took it up until 2nd year and was glad to be rid of it. Is it because I'm a girl? No... I know a ton of girls who were whizzes at it. This shirt design isn't really a big deal...
