Who's Confessed to Regretting Their Oscar Gown?

We’ve all made some regretful wardrobe decisions in our day (mine was in elementary school, when I attempted to emulateChristina Aguilera’s “Come on Over Baby” look with plaid L.L. Bean pajama pants). But for celebrities, their wardrobe fails are painstakingly available at the click of a button.

Some make a comeback, like the Olsen twins, who miraculously transformed from dorky girls into fashion’s most stylish women (they have even been awarded best designers of the year in 2014 by the Council of Fashion Designers America with their label The Row), or Victoria Beckham. Some wardrobe fails, on the other hand, are tragic, like when Britney Spears walked the red carpet with her beau, JT in full denim looks at the 2001 at the American Music Awards: she wore a full length gown while he wore a “Canadian tuxedo.”

With the Oscars quickly approaching this weekend, superstars are already slimming down into dresses, attending fittings, and carefully selecting their accessories to avoid any negative commentary from Kathy Griffin’s Fashion Police squad.

Of course, in the past there have always been last minute changes and embarrassing wardrobe malfunctions like Jennifer Lopez’s accidental nip-slip at the awards in 2012 (or even Jennifer Lawrence’s graceful fall upon accepting her golden statue). But despite a bad critique, many celebrities remain tight-lipped about their egregious wardrobe mistakes for several reasons, among them million dollar contracts with fashion brands and long-term relationships with stylists. But a few brave souls have fessed up to their fashion faux pas.

Anne Hathaway at the 2013 Oscars in Prada

The Oscar winner claimed that she regretted making a last minute dress change—from Valentino to pink Prada gown—because of the awkward side-cleavage and awful wrinkles the gown picked up after sitting in the theater for hours. By the time Hathaway leapt to accept her award for best supporting actress in Les Miserables, her dress looked unkempt and frumpy. Hathaway issued an apology to designer Valentino, who had once said that dressing the actress was like dressing his daughter. Initially, Hathaway explained that she preferred the Prada dress over the Valentino gown designed specially for the evening. But she later told a source that, “It came to my attention late Saturday night that there would be a dress worn to the Oscars that is remarkably similar to the Valentino I had intended to wear, and so I decided it was best for all involved to change my plans.”

Gwyneth Paltrow at the 2002 Oscars in Alexander McQueen

Paltrow has debuted some of the most elegant gowns on the Oscars’ red carpet, like her simplistic, pale pink Ralph Lauren dress in 1999 when she won the Oscar for Best Actress for her role in Shakespeare in Love, (one of the show’s most iconic dresses ever). Unfortunately, the Oscars veteran expressed disappointment with another choice: this Alexander McQueen gown under which she wishes she had “worn a bra.” The designer, who hated celebrities and once barred Victoria Beckham from attending his catwalk show because he thought she was “stupid,” actually became close friends with Paltrow. In his newest biography, Gods And Kings he was quoted saying, “The stars you see at my shows, be it Gwyneth Paltrow, be it anyone else, are there because I’ve got a connection with them… [I design for] intelligent women.”

Angelina Jolie at the 2013 Oscars in Versace

In perhaps the most talked about dress of the year, Jolie bared a lot of leg in a high-slit Versace gown, but the actress still “struggles” over her choice of wearing it. She says she was humiliated that her stylist put her in a dress that apparently “swallowed her up,” forcing her to stick out her right leg all night so that she didn’t look like she was wearing a “bin bag.” Jolie was allegedly so embarrassed by the dress and her awkward leg photos that she refused to attend any post-show parties.
