Ways Celebs Prep Their Skin for Winter: Ampoules, Mists, and More

By Petra Guglielmetti

I’m sure you’ve already noticed, but right now is a tough time of year for skin—the shift from harsh summer sun exposure to harsh cold winds and dry air can leave your skin parched, irritated, and the opposite of glowy. Wondering how to update your skin care routine and face winter looking pretty? We asked celebrity makeup artist Matin to share his favorite secrets to keeping clients’ skin smooth and radiant during this transitional season.

1. Gentle exfoliation. It can be tempting to scrub away at flaky, itchy skin with something abrasive, but overzealous exfoliation can do much more harm than good this time of year. “You don’t want something that’s going to leave micro scratches on the skin,” Matin explains. Instead, try a gentle product that dissolves dead skin away using ingredients like lactic and/or glycolic acid. Matin’s favorite: Immunocologie Exfoliating Lotion. “It can be used daily and just kind of sucks off the dead skin, bringing it back to a healthy glow,” he says.

2. Masks and ampoules. Especially between summer and winter, when you’re going from a time that you might’ve abused your skin in the sun to when you’re abusing it in the wind, it’s important to not only moisturize but to use face masks or ampoules,” Matin says. Never heard of ampoules? They’re usually small, sealed glass vials that contain a product with highly concentrated ingredients. Matin carries ampoules in his kit to use on clients before makeup, and this time of year recommends they use a monthlong series of ampoule treatments like Orlane Anti-Aging Oxygenation System. “It gets their skin back to a normal, healthy state before the winter months start,” he says.

A more budget-friendly way to reinvigorate skin is to use a good old-fashioned hydrating mask a few times a week. “I love the Juara Avocado Banana Moisture Mask and leave it on thick for 20 minutes,” Matin says. “Then, instead of washing it off, I’ll either tissue it off or take a spatula or spoon—something with smooth edges—and remove the excess. Then I’ll massage anything left over into the skin and go to sleep.” A great time to do this trick: during holiday travel! “When flying, I always prefer to use a moisture mask rather than a moisturizer because it provides really deep hydration,” Matin says.

3. Layering with serum. Add a hydrating antioxidant serum before your moisturizer to give skin an added layer of protection from the elements (like a “cushion” atop skin that’s thin and/or dry). One that he likes: Tata Harper Replenishing Nutrient Complex, which you can also use over makeup to replenish moisture and plump skin during the day, including atop fine lines around the eyes or mouth.

4. Mists. To rebalance and calm the skin whenever it’s feeling irritable or dry, try a hydrating mist, like Jurlique Rosewater Balancing Mist. “I like to give it to clients to keep in their bags to use throughout the day,” Matin says.

Do you use any of these skin care products in your pre-winter routine right now—serums, masks, ampoules, or mists? Which ones, and why do you like them? Share below!
