lunch-box fave peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.
Ready to switch things up? Food Republic has listed new interesting sandwich combination — all including the go-to staple, peanut butter.
While banana, honey and Nutella all seem like obvious peanut-butter partners, mayo does not. But apparently, mayonnaise and peanuts go way back: More than a century ago, The Southern Housekeeper’s Peanut Sandwiches were filled with chopped roasted peanuts mixed with mayo.
Two crispy combos also made the list: peanut butter and potato chips —“crisp, savory and chock full 'o salt”— and peanut butter and bacon.
“Salty, meaty and crunchy to PB's salty-sweet, nutty and smooth. We find these textures and flavors extremely attractive,” Food Republic’s Jess Kapadia says of the bacon.
Seems like she’s on the same page as other foodies who love the breakfast staple featured in a new culinary trend: bacon jam.
Toronto recently saw the launch of Skillet Original Bacon Spread at specialty store All the Best Fine Foods. It is now available in boutique shops across Canada.
Seattle-based chef Josh Henderson, founder of Skillet Street Food, first created the spread as a burger-topper, a puree of caramelized bacon, onions and balsamic vinegar.
“Initially, when I first started, I had no desire to sell a condiment,” he told the Globe and Mail. “But it became pretty apparent after a while that this was something that could be pretty interesting.”
Bacon jam’s application has extended beyond the burger. Henderson uses it in paninis and grilled sandwiches, as a base for vinaigrettes, in scrambled eggs, and on pasta.
For those of us not keen to shell out almost $20 for spreadable bacon — although it’s very tempting — Loblaws is introducing Bacon Marmalade ($4.99) this October as part of the new Black Label line from President’s Choice.
Adventurous bacon-lovers can make their own bacon jam. Find Henderson’s basic recipe at the Toronto Star.
Would you try it? More importantly, would you pair it with peanut butter?
