Two haircuts set to be big in 2011

Those looking to seriously update their 'dos in the new year need not look any further.  Renowned hairstylist Brian Phillips, who owns Toronto hot spot worldSALON, has shed some much-needed light on what cuts are about to go mainstream.  Phillips has styled the hair of an array of A-listers including Kim Cattrall, Terrence Howard, Vivica Fox, Nora Jones and Jessica Stam – He knows his hair.  So take a look at what’s in store…

For Girls: Short boyish crops

For the ladies, Phillips sees pixie crop haircuts taking off.  For this look, think Emma Watson, Carey Mulligan, and Sienna Miller circa 2005.

"I love this Sienna Miller cut, because it is softer yet edgy and more forgiving than the Emma Watson pixie," says Phillips. "In the late eighties, many women chopped off their hair after Linda Evangelista paved the way, and we haven't seen anything really radical in the mass market since then - it's time!"

For Guys: Big 50s messy pomps

Phillips sees larger-than-life pompadour hairstyles in store for men in the coming months.  "Guys are dressing up more and spending more time on themselves in general," he says.  "With the right cut, a bit of styling and the right non-toxic product like worldPRODUCT ($19-37, www.world.ca), this will be a great look for urban guys of all stripes."

The 50s-inspired retro ‘do was all the rage at menswear shows last year (see Bottega Veneta and Jil Sander) and bombarded Lanvin’s Fall 2010 ad campaign.

Do you guys agree?  What direction is hair heading in 2011?
