Rihanna Channels The Last Empress In a Gorgeous Gold Coat at the Met Gala

We know how much Rihanna loves to make an entrance. Let’s just take a moment to reflect. There was the full sheer number at last year’s CFDA awards that literally put everyone else to shame. Then, at the Grammys, a pink voluminous Giambattista Valli couture dress that took up the entire red carpet. So for fashion’s version of the Oscars (aka the Met Ball), you know that she was going to try and upstage the hoi polloi.

The fashion chameleon stayed on theme by choosing a Chinese designer for the occasion. For those who don’t know Gou Pei, she is considered the Alexander McQueen of China for her elaborate creations. Her clothes rival those of the Parisian couturiers. (Tomorrow, she’ll release a special limited-edition collaboration with M.A.C Cosmetics.)

But back to Rihanna, the iconic performer wore a custom creation by Pei. A long—as in down the staircase—gold silk coat with fur trim. The full flare of the coat took over the red carpet (good thing she was among the last to arrive!) and took three people to fluff for the perfect photo op.
