Best and worst of Miss Universe 2012 promo dresses

Miss Belgium 2012, Laura Beyne: If Beyne was going to Atlantic City, I would understand this outfit. But she's not. So why is she wearing a multi-print animal gown for the Miss Universe pageant? At least she could have stuck with just one animal print. It's too busy and too messy. Photo By Matt Brown/Miss Universe Organization

Miss Ecuador 2012, Carolina Andrea Aguirre Pérez: Mermaid gowns were everywhere last year from Beyonce at the Met Gala to basically every celeb at the Oscars. But the trend has come and gone and this purple disaster should be thrown in the garbage bin. Photo By Matt Brown/Miss Universe Organization

Miss Cayman Islands 2012, Linsday Japal: Here's another example of a mermaid dress gone wrong. A proper one should have a long train but this skirt comes up short. And that extra flap above the skirt doesn't add anything to the look. Photo By Matt Brown/Miss Universe Organization

Miss Canada 2012, Yamoah Adwoa: Canada does it right! Adwoa's version of the mermaid dress is perfect: The train is long, the skirt poofs out at the right spot just above her knee and the slim, beautifully-detailed bustier looks gorgeous. She's so pretty in pink! Photo By Matt Brown/Miss Universe Organization

Miss China 2012, Ji Dan Xu: It's a bit Stars on Ice but Xu pulls it off. The rich plum colour looks amazing against her skin and the crystal embelishments on the bustier look elegant, not over-the-top. Photo By Matt Brown/Miss Universe Organization

Miss Curacao 2012, Monifa Jansen: This dress is a crown-winner (minus the odd bikini top.) From the delicate sheer bodysuit with gold flowers, to the sleek skirt, this outfit is a dream come true. Again, minus the bikini top. Photo By Matt Brown/Miss Universe Organization

Miss Cyprus 2012, Ioanna Yiannakou: We're not sure whether Yiannakou is auditioning for 'Dancing With the Stars' or a Las Vegas revue show. Photo By Matt Brown/Miss Universe Organization

Miss Denmark 2012, Josefine Hewitt: Think of this dress as a modern toga. It could have gone so wrong but it looks elegant, especially with the pearl-encrusted neck piece. Photo By Matt Brown/Miss Universe Organization

Miss Dominican Republic 2012, Dulcita Lieggi: We love it when women wear column dresses, mostly because we're tired of elaborate princess gowns. The column dress is elegant, sleek and chic. Too bad Lieggi ruined her otherwise gorgeous gown with what basically looks like gold string hanging down from her chest. Photo By Matt Brown/Miss Universe Organization

Miss Gabon 2012, Channa Divouvi: From the waist up, this dress is almost acceptable. The gold bows are pretty and not too over-the-top. The sequined bustier is a pretty shade of green and complements the gold. However the skirt has got to go. It makes her waist look bigger than it actually is and it's wrinkled!
