Red lips reigned on the red carpet at Sunday’s Academy Awards in Los Angeles. This classic beauty statement felt polished, fresh, and bold after an awards season that saw a lot of neutral makeup looks in the spotlight.

Makeup artist Tyron Macchausen created Margot Robbie’s orangey-red lip by lining lips with Hourglass Panoramic Long Wear Lip Pencil in Raven ($28), followed by Hourglass Opaque Rouge Liquid Lipstick in Raven ($28).

"Fifty Shades" star Dakota Johnson matched her cherry pout to her Saint Laurent gown. Chanel makeup artist Yoshimoto Buta started by filling in her lips with Chanel Precision Lip Definer in Capucine ($29) and finished the look with Chanel Rouge Coco Ultra Hydrating Lip Colour in Gabrielle ($36).

Lady Gaga’s bold red carpet lip (she toned things down on stage for her ‘Sound of Music’ tribute) was courtesy of a combination of two Nars classics: Dragon Girl Velvet Matte Lip Pencil ($26) and Jungle Red Lip Liner ($22).

For Jenna Dewan-Tatum, makeup artist Patrick Ta used a coral red lipstick to complement her rosy cheeks and finished off the look with a clear lip gloss.
