Love is in the air: Delta passenger says “yes” to mile-high proposal

He proposed where they first met — 32,000 feet in the air.

Arvin Shandiz popped the question to his unsuspecting girlfriend, Alexandra Williams, on a Chicago-bound Delta Airlines flight last weekend.

“Good evening everyone, my name is Arvin, and I’m on this flight with a beautiful young lady I met almost two years ago flying Delta Air Lines," Shandiz said over the plane’s loudspeaker. "From the moment that I met her that night, I knew I never wanted to spend a second without her. Alex, you’re the most beautiful girl in the world, and you make me so incredibly happy. So would you marry me?”

They first met on a similar New York-to-Chicago flight in January of 2010.

“It was love at first sight,” Shandiz told ABC News. “I knew from the very beginning that that she was who I would spend my life with.”

Delta Official Leslie Parker, who had been contacted by Shandiz a few weeks prior to the proposal, caught the moment on camera.

“I had no idea what was happening,” Williams, an occupational therapy student, told the Chicago Sun-Times.

“I told her we were going to see my brother’s new baby in New York,” said Shandiz, an options trader, who admitted the event took about a month to plan, with Delta enthusiastically doing most of the work.

“They are a fantastic couple and we are thrilled to be a part of that flight in their lives,” Parker said.

The airline even helped the couple celebrate with champagne for everyone on board.

Delta surprised the newly engaged couple with a free honeymoon trip when they returned to Chicago on Sunday.

“It was magical to say the least, and it’s been a fairy tale from the moment we met,” said Williams.

Shandiz’s proposal joins the ever-growing list of public on-camera proposals. From protests-turned-romantic to movie-trailer surprises to a 1,000-mile walk to engagement, it’s now trendy to have your moment covered by local (or better, national) media.
