Julia Louis-Dreyfus has been a household name since her “Seinfeld” days in 1989 and somehow looks better than ever at 54 years old. But in a new interview with NewBeauty, she says aging in front of the camera hasn’t been easy. “I’ve gotten older in front of you and that is odd—it is still so strange to me that everyone has seen me age on a public stage,” Louis-Dreyfus tells the magazine. “It’s totally changing and difficult.”

The “Veep” actress takes good care of herself, but don’t get her started on the concept of anti-aging. “I hate that word!” she tells NewBeauty. “It should be something positive, like pro-aging. I think of my mother, who will be 81 this year and is beautiful. She really is one of those women who has aged gracefully and naturally. She hasn’t done anything fancy and I really like the way she has aged; I am lucky I am related to her because I do believe so much of this stuff has to do with genetics. I probably can’t say it as succinctly as her, but she always said something along the lines of, ‘You can’t fight it, it’s going to happen. Embrace it! Celebrate it!’ I won’t let it go to seed. I want to stand up to it. I think it’s great I’m in my 50s and still going.”

Going against the grain in Hollywood, Louis-Dreyfus wants to age gracefully and avoid going under the knife. “Surgery really scares me,” says Louis-Dreyfus. “I’m really afraid of it.” As a result, she is religious about her beauty routine. “I try to be natural and organic when it comes to what I’ll use for skin care. I actually use Burt’s Bees Baby cream for my body. It’s free of chemicals, its pure, and its also incredibly restorative.” The star also swears by face masks from Le Mieux. “When I’m working, I’m constantly taking my makeup on and off and it’s really hard on my skin. They are hydrating and help give you have that glow. I use them once a week, sometimes twice when I’m shooting.” And when she’s at home, she has a secret beauty habit: “I cannot live without my magnifying mirror in my bathroom,” she says. “It’s like 5X magnification. It really helps.”

She does have some words of wisdom when it comes to beauty. “When I was younger, I would always powder away shine on my skin, but a certain kind of shine is very youthful and nice to have,” says Louis-Dreyfus. “That’s something I just learned of late. Drink water! Wear sunscreen! And, if you smoke, stop immediately! It kills your skin.”
