How to Make Your Blowout Last All Week

You paid for it—either in cash or in sore triceps—so you might as well make that round-brush blowout last as long as humanly possible. In our experience, that’s five full days. Here’s how we do it.

DAY 1
It’s a blowout day!
You got that blowout, and damn, it looks good. But don’t ruin it by smashing it on a pillow for eight hours tonight. We like to use scrunchies (yes, scrunchies) to pull our hair into a low pony or two Princess Leia–style buns before we hit the (preferably) silk or satin pillowcase. And it goes without saying, but make sure you use a shower cap tomorrow morning—extra points if it’s lined in terry cloth.

DAY 2
Your roots are —WOMP WOMP—starting to droop.
Don’t reach for the dry shampoo just yet. That tends to give hair a matte texture—meaning you’ll lose all that shiny goodness you just had 24 hours ago. Instead, spray a light-hold hair spray (likeBig Sexy Hair Get Layered Layering Hairspray) on a paddle brush, flip your head upside down, and brush the roots. This gives you volume without the dust cloud. We also love Living Proof Hold Flexible Hairspray andL’Oréal Paris Elnett Satin Hairspray.

DAY 3
Your roots are oily, and your blowout looks sad.
Have you tried dry texturizing spray yet? It’s basically a dry shampoo/hair spray hybrid that gives your hair a bit of volume and structure (we love Garnier Fructis De-Constructed Texture Tease and Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray). Hairstylist Adir Abergel suggests flipping your head upside down, misting one to three spritzes from roots to ends, and tousling with your fingers. If you have thick or curly hair, smooth a dab of moisturizing cream over dry ends. If you have fine hair, a quick shot of dry conditioner (like Serge Normant Meta Revive Dry Conditioner) is a lighter alternative.

DAY 4
You’re rocking full-on bedhead (and not the Brigitte Bardot kind).
This might sound a bit odd, but spritz your hair with water. “You’ll get body without the extra weight, crunchiness, or product buildup,” says hairstylist Garren. Rough-dry your hair or let it air-dry, then tousle a bit of dry shampoo (we love Dove Refresh + Care Dry Shampoo) through your roots to mop up grease. Run a flatiron (like the GHD Eclipse Styler) through your hair—very quickly—to smooth it out. “More than a few seconds with an iron can create a mark or leave hair looking sculpted,” says hairstylist Serge Normant.

DAY 5
Your hair is dirty, girl. Just go with it.
Spray your hair with salt spray (we love Davines No. 14 Sea Salt Primer For Wizards and KMS California Hairplay Sea Salt Spray) for cool, piecey separation. Bonus: Salt sprays also break down oil and product residue in the hair, says cosmetic chemist Ni’Kita Wilson. Now is also a really good time to do one of those cute hairline braids or twists you like, or to slap on a new headband or two.

DAY 6
Shower time.
Reward yourself by getting your hair squeaky-clean with a clarifying shampoo. We love Pantene Pro-V Weekly Deep Cleanse With Mosa Mint Oil Purifying Shampoo and Philip B Peppermint & Avocado Volumizing & Clarifying Shampoo. Blow-dry your hair and return to slide one.
