How to Fly When Pregnant

Air Travel When Pregnant

Let’s be honest, now that you’re pregnant, travelling can feel a little daunting. But with a little preparation and patience, flying during your pregnancy can be a breeze. Our five tips for pregnant women planning on air travel is just the ticket.

When Can Pregnant Women Fly

According to the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada, air travel is safest for pregnant women before the 20th week. It’s also better not to travel before the 12 week mark because of morning sickness and a slight increased risk of miscarriage. That being said, many pregnant ladies have no trouble flying in their first trimester.

Check Airline Rules for Pregnant Women

If you’re booking flights with an agent, let them know you’re pregnant and check if you’re permitted to fly. If booking flights online, check the airline’s website for their rules for pregnant flyers. Also, avoid smaller planes that fly below 7,000 feet and opt for larger planes with pressurized cabins instead.

Travel Insurance for Pregnant Women

Pregnant women are sometimes seen as relatively high-risk, and many insurers won’t provide air-travel coverage if you have less than eight weeks to go before your due date. You could still claim losses unrelated to your pregnancy, but you might not be covered if you have to cancel your trip due to your pregnancy. Double-check your travel insurance before taking off.

Stay Hydrated

Dehydration on airplanes can be worse when you’re pregnant, so drink plenty of caffeine-free drinks before, during and after the flight. Not only will it keep you hydrated but will make your skin glow even more than usual.

What to Wear on a Flight When Pregnant

It goes without saying that loose, comfy clothes are the way to go when flying — pregnant or not — but mamas-to-be should take it a step further and wear compression hose to prevent feet from swelling and shoes with adjustable straps. Also, get up and walk around the cabin every two hours or so to help circulation.
