Hotel builds hut entirely out of gingerbread

A Chinese hotel is spreading holiday cheer, Hansel and Gretel-style.

In the front lobby of the five-star Four Points hotel in Lianyungang, China, an entirely edible gingerbread hut welcomes guests. More than 30 staff spent almost a month creating the large structure, using 250kg of flour, 300 bottles of honey and 50kg of sugar in the process. Even the stockings and decorative items are edible.

The hotel estimates that the project cost 30,000 Yuan (or $5,000 CAD).

On the other side of the globe, in Rochester, Minnesota, another large gingerbread house stands in a hotel lobby.

A 16-foot tall “brick house” made of more than 4,000 pounds of gingerbread wows guests at the Kahler Grand Hotel.

“The idea was sparked by knowing that people are going to be here over the holidays,” marketing associate Chelsea Reich said. The hope is that the house will serve as “a spirit-lifter for our guests,” many of whom are patients at the adjacent Mayo Clinic.

And in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, a winter-wonderland scene made from 600 pounds of chocolate welcomes guests the Harbor Beach Marriot Resort & Spa.

‘Tis the season for sugar-built décor.
