Family, Hospital 'Shocked' by Enormous 13-lb. Baby

Mia Yasmin Garcia might be Mom and Dad’s youngest baby

and at 13 pounds and 13 ounces, she’s certainly their biggest.

In fact, she weighs more than mom Alisha Hernandez’s twins combined.

Hernandez, of Monte Vista, Colorado, was scheduled for a C-section on December 4, and had been told to expect a 7-pound baby.  When she went into labor on Monday and eventually had Mia via C-section, family — and hospital staff — were in for a surprise. “They’re all shocked that they’re seeing a baby like that,” father Francisco Garcia told local KUSA news. “They opened their eyes like they’ve never seen a baby like that!”

Mia, who was 22 inches long, was flown to Children’s Hospital in Aurora for help with respiratory difficulties and low glucose levels, according to KUSA. She is stable, and her family hopes to take her home within a week.

Garcia says none of his other four daughters were especially big babies. ”Not even the twins that I have,” he said. “Both together, they weighed 12 pounds. Yea, we got her by surprise.”

When Mia was first born, Garcia says he knew she seemed bigger than average, but even he couldn’t have predicted the nearly 14-pound weigh in. “The nurse, she got shocked. She’s like come here! Come here! Come here! She’s like come here! Run! I went and I’m like, what happened? She’s like, well check out this! I checked it, and it was 13 pounds and 13 ounces.”

Mia isn’t the first big baby to make news this year. In January, Andrew Cervantez was born in Hesperia, California, tipping the scales at 15 pounds, 2 ounces. And Massachusetts parents Caroline and Bryan Ruscak welcomed 14.5 pound baby Carisa in April.

Only about one in every 100,000 babies weighs more than 14 pounds, Dr. Robert Barbieri, chief of obstetrics and gynecology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, told ABC news.

TORY: I Feel Cheated By My C-Sections

With five girls, Garcia told KUSA he and his wife are done having kids. “We tried our best to get a boy,” said Garcia. “We never got it. We’re still happy though.”
