Don’t be afraid of art. When a landscape, portrait, print, watercolor or statue harmonizes with your home, you’ve successfully enhanced a room. Here are some tips to get you started.

1. Notice Displays

Scan the exhibits in coffee shops, restaurants and colleges. Artists exhibiting their wares in these venues and not in galleries may offer better prices for their work.

2. Look at Different Mediums

Decide what will influences the room’s décor the most. Do you want one oil painting with a big punch or a few smaller photographs? Sculptures tend to add depth to a room while a painting brings in more color.

3. Size Matters

Measure the size of the wall you plan to tackle. Take several photos of the room so when you’re shopping you can better imagine what the space will look like with the specific art.

4. Consider Color

Match some of the colors in the artwork to the same colors in the room. Complementary shades also do the trick. Keep in mind the walls, furniture, pillows and curtains when deciding on a palette for your new art.

5. Buy What Appeals to You

If you don’t absolutely love the piece, don’t bring it home. You want something that gives you enjoyment because you will see it every day.

6. Hang It Properly

Art galleries show paintings and photographs at eye level, which means the center is about 60 inches from the floor.

7. Try Rotating Your Art

Change your artwork as often as you want. When you get bored with a landscape, switch to an abstract. Try cool tones in summer and bursts of brown, orange and red in fall.
