10 Top Trends in Wall Treatments

Changing the look of one wall livens up the entire room. In the past, paint and wallpaper were the only options. Today, a myriad of décor possibilities exist. To start with, pick a single wall to accent. Doing too much overwhelms the room. If your first choice enhances the décor, feel free to tackle another room.

Trends this year run the gamut:

1. Pick a Popular Paint Color

Pantone, the quintessential word in color, named Marsala, a wine-inspired red-brown, the color of the year. Each paint company threw their own favorites into the ring and those included silvery green, opaque noir, coral, calming teal, Caribbean blue and burgundy.

2. Hang Wallpaper

Cover a wall with a large, bold design or select something more delicate and add two or three stripes in the center of a painted wall. Attractive papers, not the tiny flowers and checks of yesteryear, currently flood hardware and wallpaper stores.

3. Try Temporary Wallpaper

If you’re hesitant about making a commitment to wallpaper, now the market offers a covering so easy to remove, you can change it often. Tired of stripes, then opt for a woodgrain feel. Chevrons, damask, Alice in Wonderland and numerous other patterns have morphed into hassle-free wallpaper.

4. Erect a Mural

Modern digital technology now gives sharper pictures and brighter colors than the past. Upload your desired image to a website like Murals Your Way, Majesty Maps & Prints or EazyWallz and select the size and any customizable options you desire.

5. Style with Stencils

Showcase these versatile designs on a wall or relegate them to the background. You can even replicate them on furniture, curtains, pillows and other accents in the room to carry out a theme. The variety of stencils available knows no limits, from pineapples to starbursts to cherry blossoms to every pattern you can imagine.

6. Apply Texture

Hung like wallpaper, textures can give a room a three-dimensional feel. Upholster your wall in stucco, leather, vinyl, hemp, crocodile skin, Mother-of-Pearl or suede. Visualize a surface for the room and more than likely you’ll find the matching wall covering.

7. Bring Nature Inside

Forget about off-the-rack wall coverings and select a non-traditional product instead. Cork, bamboo and barrel-oak veneer all come to mind. You may find these sold as flooring, but go ahead and put them on a wall.

8. Lay Tile

Another typical floor covering or bathroom staple, tile also works well as a wall treatment. Try a plain color, geometric pattern, mosaic, simulated brick or even hand-painted varieties.

9. Create a Rugged Look

Exposed brick and wood-plank walls have trended for many years and still remain classics. If you opt for a recycled product like these, then you’ve adopted an environmentally trend, an additional plus.

10. Check Out Chalkboard Paint

Still undecided about what route to take? Paint a child’s bedroom wall with chalkboard paint and let her go wild with chalk. In other rooms, like the kitchen, draw wallpaper designs, hang photos, or recreate the equation on TV’s “The Big Bang Theory.” Change it up whenever you want.
