Woman banned from gym after objecting to ‘Tough Titsday’ class

A woman was recently banned from the CrossFit South Brooklyn gym in New York City when she questioned the name of a women-only exercise class called "Tough Titsday" and called into question the professional judgement of the gym owner.

Jezebel reports on an email exchange between offended gym member Rachel, owner David Osorio and CrossFit coach Margie Lempert (who named the class).

While the initial conversation started off nice enough, it lampooned into denying Rachel a membership. Here is a very condensed version of what was said.

"Do you really have to call a female class 'Titsday'???" Rachel writes. "It's kind of misogynistic — which was not the vibe I got at the gym. I suggest changing the class name to something more neutral — and I'm not an uptight person but it's a repulsive word — my opinion and probably other women's opinion."

Rachel first got a response from Lempert who said she created the class to empower women.

"It is rare in our culture that we foster and celebrate women in strength, so I am especially proud that I was a part of a business that goes out of its way to do so," Lempert writes. "As for the name, well, it is just as it seems, a subversive, cheeky reclamation of silly vulgarity."

But Rachel was not so convinced the class name reclaimed the word "titsday."

"If you counter your 'tough titsday' with 'tough cockday' or 'big balls day' maybe I'll join your class," counters Rachel.

In the end, Osorio responded to Rachel. After a long back and forth between the two, he eventually kicked her out of the gym giving his reasons on the company blog.

"I told her she couldn't join because after several attempts to discuss the issue in a civil manner, including inviting her to the next TTD meet, she continued on to criticize me personally," he writes.

"As a small business owner, I have the luxury of denying a patron service if I feel they've been unreasonable or disrespectful, and in this instance I felt exactly that."

The CrossFit company decided to post a very brief excerpt from the email exchange on their Facebook page, garnering all sorts of mixed reaction from their fans.

And some people have gone as far as posting their opinions on the company's Yelp page.

"I don't find the name of the class particularly offensive on its own. But combined with the spirit of his response, I do now," writes Lexi A.

"This is not the kind of business we need in my neighborhood, and if this guy thinks he is somehow above public dialogue or criticism, then he needs to learn otherwise," Lexi A. continues.

But perhaps the most poignant comment so far, pointing to the absurdity of it all.

"She overreacted, box owner overreacted to her overreaction, and Jezebel made him the spokesperson for all of CrossFit. Not a big day for logic," writes Rick Jeffries on Facebook.
