VOTE: The 10 best Oscars looks of all time

Unlike a certain music award show, the Oscars red carpet tends to err on the side of conservative.

No wild space orbit dresses will make an appearance. Instead, we find the best of the best in classy couture gowns and tailored-to-perfection designer tuxedos worn by Hollywood’s leading men.

As much as we enjoy a little gossip over a poor celebrity style choice, we’re glad to see the stars looking their absolute best on Oscar night, at least for the most part.

It was tough to whittle it down, but we think these 10 ladies deserve an award for best Oscars looks of all time.

Who do you think takes the cake for best dressed? Vote in our poll, and we’ll announce the winner on Friday, Feb. 20. Did we miss your favourite? Let us know in the comments.

Julia Roberts (2001)

We’ll never forget what Julia Roberts wore to the 2001 Oscars when she won best actress for her title role “Erin Brockovich.” Her vintage velvet and satin Valentino gown couldn’t have been more perfect on the classic beauty.

Halle Berry (2002)

Berry’s 2002 Oscar dress helped put Lebanese designer Elie Saab (who is now a favourite of major Hollywood starlets like Taylor Swift) on the map. Her sheer embroidered dress stood out amongst a sea of couture gowns on the evening she won the best actress Oscar for her role in “Monster's Ball."

Sharon Stone (1998)

In 1998, actress Sharon Stone didn’t have a couture gown being custom made for her months in advance. What did she do? Well naturally, Stone borrowed a crisp white Gap button up from her husband and paired it with a floor length Vera Wang skirt. She certainly deserves a place on our list for her innovative spur of the moment outfit. We suspect J.Crew’s Jenna Lyons would have been particularly proud of Stone’s mix-and-match outfit.

Penelope Cruz (2007)

In 2007, Penelope Cruz blew us all away in a sculptural masterpiece by Atelier Versace. Her slicked back bun was the perfect hairstyle to complement the elaborate blush-coloured dress that featured a feather skirt and corset style top.

Michelle Williams (2006)

Williams shone bright the night of the 2006 Oscars in a cheery yellow dress by Vera Wang. The pleating gave the dress a little something extra, along with a bright red lip and romantic loose bun.

Cindy Crawford (1991)

Over two decades ago, supermodel Cindy Crawford accompanied Richard Gere to the Oscars in an unforgettable red dress with a plunging neckline. Evidently, the deep plunge has resurfaced as of late with actresses baring it all in daring necklines reminiscent of Ms. Crawford.

Nicole Kidman (2007)

Along with Penelope Cruz, Nicole Kidman was named in numerous best-dressed lists for her 2007 Oscar gown. Kidman wore a custom Balenciaga by Nicolas Ghesquiere dress in head-turning scarlet. The dramatic bow around her neck sealed the deal, making it one of the most memorable dresses in recent Oscar history.

Lauren Hutton (1975)

Lauren Hutton has paved the way for many Hollywood actresses and her classic style has left its mark on today’s crop of starlets. In 1975, Hutton wore a pastel rainbow-hued Grecian-inspired gown, likely made by Halston. The simplistic but no less beautiful dress is still more than relevant today — last year at the Academy Awards, Hollywood darling Lupita Nyong’o reached for a similarly shaped frock.

Charlize Theron (2004)

She might have played uncouth and unkempt serial killer Aileen Wuornos in “Monster,” but Charlize Theron turned it around in time for the 2004 Oscars. The stunning blond showed off her trim figure and golden tan in a curve-hugging beaded gown by Gucci that we’ll never forget.

Marion Cotillard (2008)

Marion Cotillard is up for another Oscar this year — and we’re wondering if the French actress will be able to top her 2008 look with something even more extravagant. Her unforgettable white beaded gown by Jean Paul Gaultier made her look like the ultimate couture mermaid.
