Vienna sushi bar installs one-way mirror into women’s bathroom

An Austrian artist and his latest installation project are making headlines.

Alexander Riegler installed a one-way mirror in the men's washroom at a Vienna sushi restaurant and gallery space, Dots. The mirror allows male patrons to peek into the women's restroom, reports Eater.com.

In January, the mirror will be reversed to peek at the men, the Associated Press reports.

Riegler tells the Heute newspaper that he intends his mirror to "stir people into a discussion of voyeurism and surveillance" and reassures the appalled population that the mirror only allows access to the sink area of the washroom.

City Councillor Sandra Frauenberger isn't impressed with Riegler's "art" and tells the Kurier paper what women everywhere are thinking, "This really is a form of harassment."

A restaurant spokesperson claims that 95 per cent of customers see the humour in the installation. Still, because of complaints, the restaurant put up a sign to warn women entering the restroom that they are about to be part of an "art project."

What do you think? Is this art or an obnoxious invasion of privacy?

More importantly, would you dare to use the washroom if you thought someone might be watching you from the other side of the mirror?
