‘Twinsters’: YouTube video connects twin sisters separated at birth

(Twinsters)

Samantha Futerman, 26, is an American actress living in Los Angeles.

Anaïs Bordier, also 26, is a French fashion student living in London.

Until last February, neither knew the other existed. And now the women are sharing their unique story in a documentary about their lives: twin sisters, separated at birth, brought together by a YouTube video.

Early last year, a friend of Anaïs' watched a YouTube video starring Samantha and was struck by the remarkable similarities between the two women. Anaïs, who was adopted shortly after birth, watched the video and agreed that the resemblance was striking.

After doing a little "light internet stalking," Anaïs sent Samantha a Facebook message.

"So…I don't want to be too Lindsay Lohan, well…but…how to put it…I was wondering where were you born?" she wrote.

"I was born on the 19th of November 1987, in Busan but my papers were made at the Holt Children's Institute, so 'officially' I was born in Seoul. My Korean name is Kim Eunwha. I arrived in France the 5th March 1988, so 3 months later."

The women spoke over Skype. They texted frequently. They exchanged near-identical baby photos. A DNA test soon confirmed the obvious: they were twins.

The "twinsters," as they called themselves, and their families met for the first time in May of 2013 in London, England. Not long after, Anaïs traveled to L.A. to visit Samantha. The duo even went to Seoul, Korea, together to visit their respective adoption agencies and see where their story began.

And because it's the stuff movies are made of, the women captured their reunion and subsequent travels on camera.

Having already met their first goal to enter production on their documentary, the sisters are currently raising additional funds on Kickstarter to help with the documentary's post-production costs.

"We are firm supporters of the social media world. Having access to such a powerful resource as Kickstarter, we are beyond grateful to have the chance to complete this project with the generous support of the people who are truly invested. Without the world of social media, we would have never been able to connect," they wrote on Kickstarter.

Anaïs and Samantha hope to submit "Twinsters" to the 2015 film festival circuit.
