‘Stink-free’ clothing made possible with silver

‘Stink-free’ clothing made possible with silver

For decades, Kodak has been using silver to produce film, but now the photography giant is harnessing the metal's powers to make stink-free clothing.

Silver is believed to prevent the growth of bacteria in sweat, which ultimately causes clothing to develop odours.

Kodak has gained exclusive rights to sell their specially formulated silver sulfate to textile company PurThread Technologies, which will be transforming the silver into wearable fabric, reports USA Today.

PurThread then contracts out the use of their silver-infused fabric to various U.S. clothing companies. The company is most well-known for selling their antimicrobial fabrics to produce clothing used in health care, such as lab coats and medical scrub tops, and they recently launched a silver golf shirt.

Kodak claims that garments using PurThread fabrics can be worn for days without smelling and won't discolour.

The science behind how silver works to combat clothing odour is something athletic wear company Lululemon is rather familiar with.

They have been using silver in their clothing since 2005, and recently became the exclusive retailer for the X-STATIC textile company, pushing Nike and Adidas out of the stink-free clothes game.

Now that PurThread Technologies is entering the athletic wear game, though, we may see more stink-free workout clothes coming to stores (and hopefully gyms) soon.
