What your sleep position says about your relationship

What your sleep position says about your relationship

Is possible to tell how happy a couple is by measuring the distance between them as they sleep?

According to a new British study, sleeping less than an inch from your partner means you're more likely to be in a happy relationship.

Researchers from the University of Hertfordshire surveyed 1,000 people and discovered that the further apart couples spent the night, the worse they reported their relationship to be.

"The results allow people to gain an insight into someone's personality and relationship by simply asking them about their favourite sleeping position," says lead researcher and psychology professor Richard Wiseman.

The data reveals that 86 per cent of those who slept less than an inch apart from their partner reported being happy with their relationship. By contrast, only 66 per cent of those who slept more than 30 inches apart reported feeling content.

Furthermore, couples who made physical contact throughout the night were happier than those without any touching.

Now, before you go running to your significant other with panicky demands that you must start sleeping closer together to save your relationship from ultimate demise -- keep in mind that very few couples actually slept less than an inch apart.

The vast majority of couples surveyed -- 86 per cent -- slept somewhere between one inch and 30 inches apart.

The survey further reveals that the most popular sleep position -- 42 per cent of those surveyed -- was lying back to back. Only 31 per cent of couples faced the same direction and four per cent faced each other.
