Relationship lessons we can learn from Will and Kate

As the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge celebrate their third wedding anniversary, we couldn't help but notice how they seem to have one of the most solid relationships of any couple in the public eye.

After a bit of thinking, we realized that there are some tried and tested techniques for keeping your relationship healthy that the royal couple often put into practice.

Here are some relationship lessons we can learn from Will and Kate.

They make time for date night

Ever since their early days as a couple (when they would hit up the party circuit together), the Duke and Duchess have made time to connect with one another on date nights. More recently, the couple has come into the habit of catching new releases at their local cinema or attending sporting events.

They spend time without the kids

Will and Kate took a lot of heat for a recent vacation to the Maldives sans Prince George. But, according to PsychCentral, "There is no substitute for shared quality time. When you make a point of being together, without kids, pets and other interruptions, you will form a bond that will get you through life’s rough spots." Author Maud Purcell, a licensed social worker adds, "Time spent together should be doing a shared activity, not just watching television."

They keep their relationship private

Aside from a couple of extremely well-timed and calculated interviews that seemed designed to merely satisfy the public interest in their relationship enough to afford them a little more privacy (think post-engagement and following George's birth), William and Kate keep the intimate details of their love life out of the tabloids. In today's day and age of Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, secrecy is a lesson we can all learn from.

They aren't afraid of a little PDA

While the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge aren't quite as lovey-dovey in public as most couples, they do display their affection for one another on occasion. These rare, candid moments show us that the couple is still more in love and committed to one another than ever.

They don't mind spending time apart

It might seem counterintuitive that spending time away from your significant other would increase the strength of your bond, but it turns out the old adage of absence making the heart grow fonder has some merit.

"Sometimes after a brief period of being away from our partners, we start to realize how much we really miss them," says Kimberly Moffit, relationship expert and psychotherapist.

When Will was working as a search and rescue pilot, he and Kate would be apart from one another for weeks at a time, and more recently Kate even spent Valentine's Day without her hubby.
