Pizza vending machines? iPhone customized burritos? Weird food technologies are taking over

Have you ever wanted to get some takeout, but just couldn't bear to put up with all the human beings you'd face when you got to the takeaway counter? For those of you who simply can't deal with talking to more humans than is necessary during your day, two new inventions in the food world promise a "human-free" environment.

The first one is Let's Pizza vending machine. Fresh, customized pizza in 2.5 minutes from a vending machine might be the norm in Europe, but it will be the new kid on the food block when it arrives in the U.S. The LA Times reports the machine uses only fresh, vacuum-packed ingredients and kneads its own dough. But the biggest selling point in the company's promo video? It makes pizza in a completely "human-free environment," suggesting it lowers the risk of germ transmission from human hands to food.

The second invention is a prototype developed by Tisch School of the Arts student Marko Manriquez called the Burritobot. Tired of food servers getting your burrito order wrong all the time? Just order one to your exact specifications from your iPhone or computer and send it to print on a 3D printer, which uses tortilla wraps and beans instead of plastic and metal, reports Mashable. Sadly, this is still being tested and not yet available for purchase.

Pam Brooks has been working at the family owned and operated Easterbrook's hotdog stand, in Burlington, Ontario, for 27 years. A staple in the community, Easterbrook's has been serving hot dogs and hamburgers at its lunch counter to multiple generations who flock to it for the food, the atmosphere and the family vibe.

She thinks the idea of a pizza vending machine is "neat," she says, and speculates it might also do well in a food truck. But she has concerns over food safety in a product like that. Working in a restaurant, food safety is their primary concern, she says. And they are always monitoring the food to make sure it's fresh and cold enough.

"I would want to know if it was actually fresh and that it was being made right," she says. "You don't know what's keeping the stuff cold inside and if the product is safe inside."

Brooks says their customers want the whole package — food, good service, atmosphere, community. And she doesn't see adding a pizza vending machine or anything like it, in the near future.

"We probably wouldn't start new things here because everyone likes keeping to the same thing," she says.
