Oscars 2015: Biggest red carpet trends

As usual, the biggest awards show of the year was quite the haute couture runway show.

Before Neil Patrick Harris’s pristine white briefs became the fashion statement of the evening, we had our attention fixated on the numerous covetable gowns and snappy unconventional tuxedos à la Jared Leto and Kevin Hart.

If you weren’t able to catch the glitz and glamour of the night, we’ve rounded up some of the notable style trends that emerged from the red carpet.

Pearl Embellishments

Perhaps most notably dressed of the evening was the always lovely Lupita Nyong’o, whose elaborate Calvin Klein gown consisted of more than 6,000 pearls. Best actress nominee Felicity Jones also dabbled in pearl embellishments with her silver Cinderella-esque Alexander Queen ball gown. Model Chrissy Teigen wore a revealing Zuhair Murad gown with a high slit, plunging neck and a few subtle pearls adorning the sheer top.

Metallic

It doesn’t appear metallic gowns are going anywhere anytime soon. “Wild” actress Laura Dern wore a majestic black and silver gown by Alberta Ferretti. Naomi Watts also chose the winning colour combination of black and silver, wearing an intricate looking Armani gown that also invoked the athletic-wear trend. Nicole Kidman didn’t fare as well in her underwhelming iridescent Louis Vuitton frock with an eyesore belt.

White Dresses

White dresses have been making the rounds on several red carpets as of late — and if the Oscars is any indication, the trend isn’t slowing down any time soon. We saw Lady Gaga in a bold statement-making Azzedine Alaïa gown paired with flared out red gloves only Gaga could (kind of?) pull off. French actress and Best Actress nominee Marion Cotillard wore white yet again, this time donning a crisp white eyelet gown by Christian Dior with an interesting bustle skimming her back. For her first red carpet in more than a year, country singer Faith Hill opted for a long-sleeved beaded gown by J. Mendel.

Floral Applique

Signs of spring came in the form of floral applique at this year’s Oscars red carpet. E! co-host Giuliana Rancic wore a glamorous red Mireille Dagher gown with floral applique embellishments throughout. Singer (and Andy Samberg’s wife) Joanna Newson channeled Grace Kelly in a white vintage looking gown with pretty floral embellishments on the bodice. Julianne Moore (who took home the Best Actress trophy for “Still Alice”) chose a Chanel Haute Couture gown that reportedly took 927 hours to make. The dress featured 20,000 hand-painted sequins, accented by tiers of beaded floral shaped patterns in white and blue.

Nude Dresses

A new colour trend that we didn’t quite expect emerged on this year’s red carpet. Jennifer Aniston walked the red carpet in a glittery nude gown by Versace while the other Jennifer looked nothing short of spectacular in a voluminous nude ball gown by Elie Saab. Not too far away, Robert Duvall’s wife, film director Luciana Duvall wore a very similar gown in a peachy hue. A very pregnant Keira Knightley also chose a playful, floral-embellished nude coloured Valentino gown with an empire waist to hide her growing baby bump.
