Obama goes shopping at Gap in New York City

Aww! Are Barack Obama’s ultra-fashionable wife and daughters rubbing off on him?

While in New York City on Tuesday, President Obama took a shopping trip to the Gap. But while he’s stepped up his style game lately (Canadian tuxedo, anyone?!), he wasn’t buying for himself.

The president made a stop at the 3rd Avenue location to pick up some spring clothes for Michelle, Malia (15) and Sasha (12).

According to reports, Obama picked out a bright poppy-coloured sweater and a grey-and-white-striped number for his daughters. He also checked out the retailer’s V-necks, but passed because he was “worried the V-neck is going to slip.” (Such a dad.)

A sales associate helped Obama pick out the items – and turns out, he needed a little bit of help checking out, too.

“Oh wow, so you can sign the machine?” he joked after being told he could swipe his credit card himself. “They had these around last time I shopped.”

While we think Sasha and Malia might have preferred something from ASOS or J. Crew’s spring collection (they’re big fans of the hip brands), there was a reason Obama was visiting the Gap store.

“"In his State of the Union address, the President called for businesses to raise workers' wages,” a White House representative said according to reports. “And today the President will visit a Gap store to show his support for Gap Inc.'s decision to increase wages for their U.S.-based employees."
