While you think you may have found the gift that will knock mom's socks off, you could be way off the mark. Sure, you're not giving her a frying pan with a bra inside (at least, we hope you're not!) but a recent survey has found that nearly half of Canadian moms have pretended to like a Mother's Day gift that they actually hated.
According to the study, commissioned by Yorkdale Shopping Centre in Toronto, 42 per cent of moms admit to faking their joy over a gift. If that's not bad enough, 18 per cent of Canadian families admitted to forgetting Mother's Day completely last year!
So what does mom really want this year? The survey found that one third of moms (34 per cent) would most like to spend May 13 shopping for themselves, by themselves, making a gift card to her favourite store or shopping centre an ideal choice.
Lucia Connor, mom of two and Marketing Director for Yorkdale Shopping Centre suggests adding a personal touch to your gift card by giving it with a handwritten card or heartwarming note. Now's your chance to say thank you for all mom does for you throughout the year, so make it special.
If a gift card is too impersonal for you, the survey found that 10 per cent of moms would enjoy clothing (in the right size!), shoes or purses that are a style she likes.
"This year's spring trends — bright, floral and fun — are the perfect fit for Mother's Day gifts," says Connor. Jewelry is also a hit with 18 per cent of moms hoping for something sparkly this year.
Another great option that 30 per cent of moms said they'd most like to receive is spa treatments — no surprise given the stress facing many of today's moms.
"Spa quality products are always appreciated by a frazzled mom," says Connor. So go ahead and book mom in for a little R&R this Sunday, or pick her up her favourite lotion or bubble bath — she deserves it.
