Maple Moose potato chips among the finalists in Lay’s competition

Back in February, Lay's announced a competition for a lucky Canadian to devise a potato chip flavour that would become available in Canada as of November. The winner, determined by the most public online votes by Oct. 16, would take home $50,000 and 1 per cent of future sales for the concoction.

Last week, the four finalists and their flavours were announced. Say hello to Maple Moose from Newfoundland, Perogy Platter from Alberta, Creamy Garlic Ceasar from B.C., and Grilled Cheese & Ketchup from Ontario. All four flavours hit Canadian stores on July 30 (for a limited time only), and the four finalists received $5,000 for making the cut out of 600,000 contest submission.

Naturally, the most quintessential Canadian flavour is the Maple Moose one created by Tyler LeFrense of Isle aux Morts, N.L. He was recently featured in St. John's The Telegram discussing his claim to fame and how locals waited in line this week for their first taste of his chip flavour.

“The last thing I thought is I would get picked as a finalist," he says. “To be honest, mine is the most unique flavour of all because the other three have a taste like other chips that have already been made.”

LeFrense's inspiration came from cooking up his own hunted moose with maple syrup. He was pleasantly surprise by the chips that Lay's made based on his flavour idea.

“I thought it would be like a sweet, maple taste, but it’s almost like you picture yourself in the back of the woods, like a firewood taste and sweetness to it,” he says.

The good folks over Canada.com did their own unofficial taste test of all the four flavoured chips. They describe the Maple Moose chips as having a smokey-sweet taste.

"Certainly, it is the most eccentric idea of the quartet," writes Marc Weisblott.

What are your thoughts on the Maple Moose flavoured chips? Are you planning on trying them, or perhaps one of the other flavours?
