Hot air balloon proposal goes terribly wrong

When Stephen Richardson proposed to his girlfriend, Brandi Runyan in a hot air balloon this weekend, the scene quickly turned from romantic to terrifying in a matter of moments.

After the happy couple took a few photos to celebrate the occasion, their balloon crashed into power lines.

"She wanted a story and she got one," Richardson tells ABC of their balloon ride in Noblesville, Indiana.

The couple were accompanied by five others plus the pilot when the shocking incident occurred.

After the balloon they were in hit power lines, causing a blinding explosion of light and billowing black smoke, they crashed a second time into an open field, at which point the balloon went up in flames.

"When we hit, the pilot told us to get down," Richardson recalls. "All we saw were sparks all around us, and felt the sparks. We were all in shock and fear."

Several homes and businesses in the region lost power due to the crash.

Richardson suspects wind conditions may have caused the balloon to crash. However, the hot air balloon company, Midwest Balloon Rides of Fishers, says the cause of the collision is still under investigation.

As for the couple's wedding plans, a shaken Richardson says they will be taking a more traditional approach.

"Especially after this, we'll just keep it simple."

The couple are not the first to experience a marriage proposal in a hot air balloon horror story.

In 2012, a Louisville couple who had just become engaged in a hot air balloon hit power lines, resulting in an electrical shock to the bride-to-be and forcing the groom-to-be to administer CPR to the pilot.
