Hollywood eats: 24-carat gold chocolate Oscar statue served at Governors Ball

After weeks of the extreme dieting, juice cleansing and intense workout sessions many celebrities resorted to for last night's Academy Awards, famished starlets were no doubt looking forward to the feast awaiting them at the post-show Governors Ball. And what a feast it was.

Catered by award-winning Austrian chef Wolfgang Puck for his 18th consecutive year, 1,500 of Hollywood's finest were treated to a dinner menu of more than 50 items, from Oscar-shaped smoked salmon on flatbread and spicy tuna tartare to chicken pot pie, macaroni and cheese and braised short ribs. This year, the food was presented in small plates, passed trays and buffet style, rather than a formal dinner setting, to provide the guests with the less structured, more social atmosphere they were hoping for after enduring several hours of awards presentations. Homestyle dishes like burgers and pizzas were added to the menu and sofas and lounge chairs took the place of traditional dinner seating.

For dessert, in addition to the chocolate buffet including a chocolate fountain, tortes, truffles, cupcakes and cookies, there was chocolate mousse served inside golden egg cups, lemon meringue cones and the pièce de résistance: a 24-carat gold chocolate Oscar statue, covered in—what else?—edible gold dust.

Can't imagine Angelina Jolie sitting down to a plate of mac 'n' cheese and a chocolate statue? Puck tells the Austrian Times we shouldn't be surprised: "The diets are stuck to in the weeks running up to the Oscars. By the time the ceremony comes along, they are very hungry."

And there you have it. Celebrities are just like us.
