‘Hallelujah’: Singing priest stuns wedding guests, moves bride to tears

Billboard describes the viral video best: "Father's got talent."

Irish priest Ray Kelly is having his 15 minutes of online fame thanks to the awesome custom cover of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" he sang at a wedding at Oldcastle in County Meath, Ireland, last weekend.

Father Kelly, a trained singer currently working on his third album for charity, surprised newlyweds Chris and Leah O'Kane with the song at the conclusion of their ceremony, and brought the bride to tears.

"'We join together here today, to help two people on their way, as Leah and Chirs start their life together," he began.

"Normally local people know I sing at weddings, funerals or when I'm asked, but they didn't know — the bride Leah is from Dublin and the groom Chris is from Cookstown in County Tyrone," Father Kelly tells BBC Radio Ulter's Talkback programme.

"They were having their reception at a hotel about 10 miles away and chose our church."

He continues, "We had the rehearsal on Thursday evening and at the end I said, 'Sure, maybe I'll sing an aul song for you myself' — Leah grinned and said, 'Okay, sure,' but I don't think she was taking it too seriously."

The priest received a standing ovation.

The Irish Times reports that Father Kelly has since been inundated with requests from engaged couples to perform their ceremonies.

"I knew somebody had taken a video, but I've been absolutely flabbergasted by the response, and there has been a fair demand for me to perform now it is online," he says.

"I've only been on YouTube once or twice in my life so it was a surprise to see the video and see how many views it has, I've been floored by the reaction."
