Girl Scout sells cookies outside of a cannabis clinic

The story of a 13-year-old Girl Scout who sold cookies outside a medical marijuana clinic in San Francisco this week is raising some interesting ethical questions.

According to Mashable, Danielle Lei sold 117 boxes of Dulce de Leches and Tagalong Girl Scout cookies while camped outside The Green Cross for two hours on Monday.

Her mother, Carol Lei, says they sold 37 additional boxes than when the pair set up outside Safeway during the same two-hour period the next day.

Since marijuana is known to increase appetite, selling cookies outside a cannabis clinic seems like a smart business venture.

"They get very hungry after," Danielle eloquently explains to Legalization Nation.

Carol says her other teen daughter has also sold cookies outside cannabis clinics. She uses the opportunity to teach her daughters about the types of people who use medical marijuana.

"They learn that they are not drugged out," says Carol. "Many have serious needs, and are just a little different."

"I'm not condoning it, I'm not saying go out in the streets and take marijuana," she adds.

As for the ethics of allowing Girl Scout cookie sales outside a medical marijuana clinic, it appears it the Girl Scouts organization is divided.

While the Girl Scouts of Northern California say they support Danielle's location as they would any other legitimate business, the Girl Scouts of Oregon disagree.

In a separate incident, the Girl Scouts of Oregon released a tweet saying they do not allow their members to sell cookies "in front of marijuana shops or liquor stores/bars." The tweet was in response to what they called a hoax photo showing one of their girls selling cookies outside at cannabis clinic.

The usual pundits will no doubt weigh in on this matter -- for and against medical marijuana. But the more overwhelming issue is, does the Girl Scouts organization have any ethical obligation to control where their girls sell cookies?
