Foster child’s adoption wish comes true in time for Christmas

Fifteen-year-old foster child Davion Only is experiencing a Christmas miracle of his own making.

The Florida boy stunned members of his church this past fall when he got up and shared his simple request to be adopted, and has been taken in by a prospective family just in time for the holidays.

"I'll take anyone," Only said during his fall church speech. "Old or young, dad or mom, black, white, purple - I don't care."

The young man's plea, coupled with an appearance on ABC's "The View," brought him international recognition. Only's call for help echoed in the hearts of many parents across the globe, who then offered their homes.

"I just want people to love me for who I am and to grant me…their house and to love me no matter what," he told ABC.

Nancy Eckard Nichols of the adoption agency is calling Only's public efforts an act of bravery.

"The amount of people interested in adopting has doubled since this story came out," she says. "So Davion's the hero."

Nichols notes that adoption agencies go through stages of integrating a child into a foster parent's home and there is always a trial period.

"He's a very happy young man this Christmas. He's staying with a family we think is a positive match," she says. "Any adoption process is a delicate dance of trust before it can be finalized...And this is the first step."

In Canada alone, there are more than 78,000 children in need of adoption who are currently in the care of child welfare organizations, reports Canada's Waiting Kids.

Statistics Canada data shows that over 70,000 children under the age of 19 are in the care of foster parents.
