Five ways to wear: The black turtleneck

One turtleneck, five very different looks.
One turtleneck, five very different looks.

I’ve always been that fashion girl pontificating about the value of classic basics. Today, I hope to make a case for the black turtleneck, the often overlooked closet staple relegated to uninspiring pairings with bootcut jeans.

Yes, the black turtleneck might not have the same cachet as a Balmain bolero jacket, but its sartorial value isn’t measured by how intricate or sparkly it is.

Its value lies in its versatility. How many ways could you really reinvent that Balmain bolero? The black turtleneck, on the other hand, could be worn in countless ways – especially if you get a little creative.

Jeans don’t have to be its only partner as I hope to prove with these five totally different looks inspired by my favourite classic.

LOOK 1

Use it as a layering piece, as I’ve done here. Add visual interest by mixing and matching textures.

LOOK 2

Your summer dress is suddenly appropriate for winter with the addition of a black turtleneck underneath — add a pair of tights if you plan to brave the cold! I wore black pumps, but a pair of booties would make this outfit entirely winter ready.

LOOK 3

Black and floral make a pretty attractive duo. I completed the look with a textured woven motorcycle jacket.

LOOK 4

As long as Karl Lagerfeld’s around, head-to-toe black will always be chic — but even uncle Karl gets bored with his monochromatic uniform. A bold splash of colour or pattern will give your outfit a much-needed boost during this dreary season.

LOOK 5

Instead of jeans, I paired my black turtleneck with bright blue tuxedo pants and a faux fur vest. This look is fairly basic, but not if you play with brightly-coloured pants or a skirt. I swapped out the black pumps in favour of a pair of thigh high asymmetric boots. If faux fur isn’t your thing, a cape or blazer could easily do the job just as well.
