Five ways to take your workout to the next level this summer

It's easy to get into a workout rut. Doing the same workout over and over again is not only boring, but can also cause your body to adapt and not make the progress you want. By trying different activities you are avoiding injury (by strengthening different muscles) and avoiding workout boredom.

Sandy Hanson, personal trainer at The Next Level Training in Vancouver shared some of the top exercises that you can do to take your summer workout from good to great.

Sprints – These short bursts of running can increase your metabolism, strengthen your glutes and improve your fitness levels. You can start with short sprints of 15 seconds and alternate your sprints with a brief easy walk, then repeat. Remember to cool down after the sprints. This allows your heart rate to return to its resting pace.

Weights – A great way to keep your bones healthy and burn more calories. Adding weights to your workout routine is fantastic for shaking up your regular workout. You will start to see your body taking shape quickly. Before you do a new weight routine, warm up on a bicycle or walk to get the body ready for your weight training.

Various exercises – Try boxing, beach volleyball and other activities available in your community to mix it up. During the summer months there are plenty of new sports and workouts to try. This is the season to get your body moving and learn some new ways to keep healthy.

Target your core – Russian twists, core and plank are all great exercises for your abs. Try something new each time your work out. By the end of the summer, you will have super strong abs which will not only look great, but also help support your back. When you are doing these core exercises remember to breath.

Get outside – How long will this warm weather last? Try running, walking, hiking with a friend or get out on a bicycle. You can enjoy sun, and get your workout in too. There are so many summer sports to try, why not try something new?

After your workout, try water with a twist. Add a wedge of lemon to your water bottle. Nutritious and flavourful, lemon or lime water can add that extra kick to your regular water.
