Emerald Green named Colour of the Year 2013: Would you wear it?

If you look gorgeous in green, your annual clothing budget might need a little adjustment.

Pantone, that team of internationally renowned colour charters, has unsheathed its Colour of the Year for 2013 and the hue set to pop from shelves of handbags, dresses, scarves and shoes across the retail world is emerald green.

"The most abundant hue in nature, the human eye sees more green than any other color in the spectrum," says Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, in a press release.

"As it has throughout history, multifaceted Emerald continues to sparkle and fascinate. Symbolically, Emerald brings a sense of clarity, renewal and rejuvenation, which is so important in today's complex world. This powerful and universally-appealing tone translates easily to both fashion and home interiors."

A few trendsetters have already been snapped in various shades of the official tint.

Kate Middleton, long a champion of the lush tone, has pulled off a number of notable green-centered looks since joining the royal ranks.

And designers with an intuitive eye made emerald shades a key component of their Spring/Summer 2013 collections.

The Daily Mail notes that Nanette Lepore, Tracy Reese, NAMH and Barbara Tfank all used generous dollops of green in a garden variety of looks.

Not surprising, since Pantone engages in a sort of symbiotic relationship with global tastemakers before narrowing in on their top candidate.

The company "combs the world looking for color influences," which can come from sources as varied as stylish celebrities and hot new fabrics in the fashion world to the arenas of sports and technology.

The new hue is also good news if you had trouble pulling off last year's official pick: a warm hit of Tangerine Tango (or 17-1463 on the Pantone scale).

Past winners also include Honeysuckle (2011), Turquoise (2010), Mimosa (2009), and Blue Iris (2008).
