Easy ways to make your summer wardrobe relevant for fall

Julia Engel/Gal Meets Glam

Before you start resentfully cramming your summer wardrobe into plastic storage bins for next year, stop. We too feel the cringe-worthy signs of fall, but that hardly means you stop wearing your favourite summer pieces.

Fashion can be a pricey endeavour, so we encourage squeezing every last drop out of an item you spent your hard-earned money on. I didn’t slave over that Excel spreadsheet to wear my DVF skirt for just two months, people!

Maximize your wardrobe like a true fashionista with these summer-to-fall layering tips.

Shorts

Your favourite summer shorts are perfectly suitable for fall if you layer an appropriate pair of tights underneath. Accessorize with ankle booties to complete your cold-weather look.

Skirt

Depending on the silhouette, a skirt over pants is a thing this season, at least as per Harper’s Bazaar. A risky look, but one that can pay off if you can pull it off.

T-Shirts

Never pack away your tees for winter. T-shirts are probably the most versatile items in your closet, suitable for any season, just throw on a great blazer, cardigan or jacket over top. You can even layer a long sleeve shirt underneath, which allows you to mix and match colours and patterns.

Maxi dresses and skirts

Maxi dresses, the quintessential summer staple, can be winterized by wearing a short sweater over top. The contrast of a chunky knit sweater and a breezy skirt is actually quite becoming.

Silk tunics

Silk is a breathable fabric, which is why we live in them all summer. It’s an easy way to look professional and pulled together without much effort. In the fall, pull a sweater over top and let the collar peek out. Long vests or gilets make a nice extra layer for a milder day.

Open-toe shoes

In Rachel Zoe’s new book, Living In Style, she says that she’s an advocate for breaking fashion rules, even her own. So, it goes without saying that we encourage wearing socks with sandals – an alleged cardinal sin of fashion. A cute pair of ankle socks can look great with a chunky-heeled sandal. If you’re not sold on the ankle socks, a more conservative approach is to pair colourful tights with your open toe shoes.

Romper

Stop tucking your romper away, because it still has a good two months of wear left — if you style it right. A favourite for summer, the romper can also be transitioned for fall by adding a pair of opaque tights, a fitted blazer and a scarf for good measure. Instead of sandals, a pair of boots can work just as well, if not better.
