If you thought there couldn't be anymore hype surrounding the cronut, think again. The croissant-doughnut hybrid will be available at the Canadian National Exhibition in Toronto, but in a rather unique way.
It was recently revealed that a cronut hamburger will be served up at this year's Ex, an event notorious for its outrageous deep-fried fare. Past artery-clogging gems offered have included deep-fried butter, deep-fried chocolate bars, deep-fried mac and cheese, deep-fried pizza, and deep-fried cherries...you get the idea.
The crount burger will feature a Canadian version of the cronut split in half with a hamburger patty sandwiched in between. Essentially, the cronut acts as a bun. The burger will be made by Epic Burger and Waffles and the cronut will be made by Le Dolci bakery, both Toronto-based businesses.
The complete monstrosity is expected to be the star food offering at the CNE this year. And considering the insane popularity of cronuts in New York City, Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver, it's hard to imagine the cronut burger being a flop.
It also appears that the good folks at Le Dolci and Epic Burger and Waffles aren't the only ones with the genius inclination to make a cronut hamburger. A different version of the delicacy was recently sampled by the online food magazine First We Feast.
The publication sent their intern on a mission to create a Cronut Umami hamburger in NYC. Intern Matthew Schonfeld bought a cronut from the famous Dominque Ansel Bakery, a Umami burger from a beloved West Coast burger chain that recently debuted in NYC -- and then he put the two together. All the while, he took pictures of his six hour long adventure and the resulting food.

His final verdict: "To my surprise, the flavors melded well. The blackberry filling sweetened the savory Umami flavoring. As my waitress told me, 'It looks like a heart attack on a plate.' I corrected her, 'A little sweeter than a heart attack.'"
