Couple marry on Vancouver bus after meeting last year on same bus

Jarred Greff and Nina Schmidt, both 31, met last April on a Vancouver bus and within 24 hours they were inseparable. Fast forward to this Tuesday when the smitten couple tied the knot among family and friends on the same bus route they met - No. 3 TransLink.

“It was our dream wedding,” Schmidt tells the Vancouver Province. “There is never a week we don’t talk about our first meeting on the bus. It’s just so random.”

“It felt right to do,” Greff adds.

The wedding location was kept a secret from their 30 guests, who were picked up by a chartered bus and led to believe they were going to Canadian Memorial Church in Vancouver. They were understandably floored when the bride and groom boarded the bus and the ceremony took place.

The wedding certificate was signed on the bus's luggage storage area.

Greff wore a light blue short-sleeved, collared button-down with suspenders, while Schmidt donned her mother’s tea-length vintage wedding dress with lace overlay and short sleeves from 45 years earlier, reports the Vancouver Province.

The couple met on April 18, 2012, when Greff boarded the same bus Schmidt was on. He sat a few seats down and locked eyes with his future wife, who has just moved to the city from Germany.

“The first thing I noticed was her face, and her tights. They were really colourful, so I pointed at them and gave her a thumbs up,” Greff tells Metro.

When the seat next to her became available, he moved to it but said nothing. Schmidt thought she heard him say something, and inquired about it, only to be told he said nothing, but then the conversation got rolling. Greff told her to visit him at the hair salon he worked at, and later that day, she did.

“I was at a state of my life where I was like, ‘I’m not going to meet the right guy’ and there he was, on the bus,” Schmidt tells 24Hours. “He stood up and changed my opinion.”

They went on their first date for the next 22 hours. It involved an incredibly embarrassing bowling experience where Greff tripped and fell headfirst into the bowling lane while his pants slid off. When he turned around and noticed she was still there, he knew they were in for the long haul.

“I think that was kind of love at first sight,” Greff says.
