Cookie Monster’s secret family cookie recipe revealed!

That Cookie Monster's Famous Cookie Dough recipe has been around all along. You just had to know where to find it.

Anyone in possession of Big Bird's Busy Book from 1975 — an activity and storybook featuring the Sesame Street cast — will remember the drill.

"In this wonderful set of books me going to show you how to make all kinds of cookies!" writes the furry, blue cookie lover by way of introduction via human co-author Michael Frith.

"But first... me tell you secret recipe for Cookie Dough (it's been in my family for years.)"

If you were expecting the ultimate chocolate chip cookie recipe, you may be disappointed. The instructions will lead you to the goods for a batch of simple, but delicious sugar cookies.

So if that's okay by you, just picture Grandma Cookie Monster, a half-pound of flour in her fur, countertop full of broken eggs and melting butter for inspiration, and you're ready to get started.

Here's what you'll need to pull out from the fridge:

3/4 cup butter or margarine (soft but not melted)

1 cup Sugar

2 Eggs

1 tsp vanilla

2 1/2 cups of all-purpose flour

1 tsp baking powder

1 tsp salt

Then it's time to raid the pots and pans cabinet:

1 medium-sized mixing bowl

Measuring cup and spoons

A fork

Step-by-step:

1. Put ¾ cup of butter (or margarine) into your mixing bowl.

2. Measure one cup of sugar

3. Pour sugar over butter

4. With your fork, squash sugar and butter together until they are blended

5. Crack shells of 2 eggs and pour eggs over mixture in bowl

6. Measure 1 teaspoon of vanilla and pour over mixture

7. With fork, blend everything in the bowl together

8. Measure 2½ cups of all-purpose flour and pour over mixture in bowl

9. Measure 1 teaspoon of baking powder and sprinkle over flour

10. Measure 1 teaspoon of salt and sprinkle over flour and baking powder

11. Mix everything together either with the fork or with your hands

12. Put dough in icebox to chill (at least one hour)

After that, there are no instructions on how to bake the cookies, but if you're a bona fide cookie monster yourself, you know that eating the dough is even better than the finished product.
