Cavity-proof teeth: Keep 32 molecule could make it possible

First there was the promise of the power of seaweed to fight tooth decay, but now it looks as though science has gone one step further and in the fight against cavities.

As Gizmodo reports, scientists have discovered a molecule that could actually make your teeth cavity-proof, potentially changing dentistry forever.

The molecule has been aptly named Keep 32 — as a nod to the 32 teeth in the human mouth, and researchers José Córdoba and Erich Astudillo claim it can be added into any product (not just dental hygiene items) to help keep cavities at bay.

In order to be effective at killing the bacteria which causes cavities, Streptococcus Mutans, the product must remain in your mouth for 60 seconds — after which time you'll be protected for several hours.

Gizmodo reports that research began in 2005, and the scientists are hoping to have a product in the market in 14 to 18 months. Any product will have to go through human safety trials before it can be licensed and sold.
