California couple born on same day die one day apart — after 75 years of marriage

This is what "happily ever after" looks like.

Les and Helen Brown were born on the same day: December 31, 1918.

They were high school sweethearts.

The California couple eloped against their parents' wishes on September 19, 1937. Helen was from a working-class family, Les was from a wealthy one. Both families said it would never last.

It did.

The Browns moved to Long Beach, Calif., in 1963 and raised two sons. Helen was a housewife who sold real estate. Les owned a photography studio.

They took road trips together and worshipped at Kingdom Hall as devout Jehovah's Witnesses.

"Both families were not too thrilled about the union," their eldest son, Les Brown Jr., tells Today. "The good news is they proved them wrong."

This month, after 75 years of marriage, the 94-year-olds said goodbye together. Helen died on July 16 of stomach cancer. Les, who had Parkinson's disease, died the next day. He never knew about his wife's death.

"It was a real love match, wasn't it," Les Jr., tells the Long Beach Press-Telegram. "They were together every day for 75 years."

Their son Daniel says his parents' story is a testament to the power of love.

"It knows no barriers and seems to know no bounds. They were from different sides of the tracks and it didn’t seem to matter to them," he tells Today. "After 78 years, they were very much in love."

Zach Henderson, owner of Ma N Pa Grocery in Long Beach, tells ABC News that he saw the couple almost daily.

"About a year ago, [Helen] had her hand on his face and they were cheek to cheek," Henderson says. "She said, 'Isn't he the most handsome man you've ever seen?' That's exactly how they were. They were full of love and passion."

A public service will be held for the couple this coming Saturday in Long Beach.
