Biggest style trends at the 2015 Golden Globes

The Golden Globes may just be a precursor to the Oscars, but that didn’t make the red carpet any less of a pseudo haute couture runway show. Everyone appeared to be looking their absolute best.

As is the case with all award shows, some celebrities dazzled while others fell painfully flat.

Here are some of our favourite trends that emerged from this year’s Golden Globes.

Red hot

Being matchy matchy with the red carpet was a noticeable trend at this year’s Golden Globes. The bombshell shade was seen in abundance on Sunday night, on the likes of Taylor Schilling who proved her red Ralph Lauren gown is definitely the new black. “Girls” star Allison Williams also shone in red in Armani Prive, as did Julianna Margulies and Catherine Zeta-Jones.

Sparkle

A little sparkle in a sea of stars makes perfect sense. This year’s Golden Globes saw a number of attendees in sparkles and metallics that lit up the red carpet. Julianne Moore wore a somewhat busy but still extremely flattering sequin dress by Givenchy Couture. Meanwhile, “Orange is the New Black“‘s Uzo Aduba traded in her orange jumpsuit for a sparkly silver Randi Rahm beaded gown. Dakota Johnson impressed in a leg baring Chanel Couture sequin dress and Reese Witherspoon looked pretty and understated in silvery Calvin Klein number.

Deep dive

No matter how often celebrities are seen in plunging necklines, the daring look never fails to grab our attention. This year, Sienna Miller (Miu Miu), Kate Hudson (Versace), Lana Del Rey (Travilla) and Jessica Chastain (Versace) all celebrated great cleavage, leaving little to the imagination, in a good way of course.

White out

Stepping out in all white is always an elegant choice, sure to show off a great tan and perennially posh. Celebrities who went the winter white route included actresses, Emily Blunt (Michael Kors), Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Narcisco Rodriguez), Rosamund Pike (Vera Wang) and Salma Hayek (Alexander McQueen).

Blue belles

Between yellow and blue, we think blue won out as a top trend by just a hair. The cool colour was seen in a variety of shades and silhouettes. Co-host Amy Poehler wore a cobalt blue Stella McCartney dress while Maria Menounos went glamorous in a body hugging breaded dress by Gabriela Candena. “The Affair” actress Julia Goldani Telles wore a blue Carmen Marc Valvo gown and “ET” host Nancy O’Dell followed suit with a jewel-toned off-the-shoulder dress.

Little mermaid

We noticed an abundance of dramatic mermaid dresses sashaying across the red carpet. We can only imagine how difficult it was to walk inthe restricting silhouette, but who needs practicality when you have a fishtail gown as lovely as Laura Prepon (Christian Siriano), Patricia Arquette (Escada), Kristin Dos Santos and Giuliana Rancic (Maria Lucia Hohan)

A whole lotta leg

I suppose we have Angelina Jolie to thank for bringing high slits to the forefront. Three years after her famous Oscars appearance, we still have celebrities attempting to one up Jolie. This year’s Golden Globes saw actresses Emanuelle Chriqui, Jennifer Aniston (Saint Laurent), Jennifer Lopez (Zuhair Murad) and Conchita Wurst competing for best gams.
