Beauty product review: Murad’s Pore Reform skincare regimen

As the years go by, everyone experiences the different phases of aging -- the dark bags under our eyes grow deeper, our precious hair gets sparser and our pores become more... let's just say prevalent.

Well, maybe “prevalent” isn’t the right word.

How's this? Our pores become vortexes -- black holes that are just waiting to widen and infect themselves with dirt, oil and other unspeakable debris. What's a girl to do? There’s got to be a better way to deal with blackheads than violently gouging them out with our fingernails.

Up on the docket is the new Pore Reform line launched this summer by the skin care experts at Murad, which promises to unclog and seal pores to prevent further blackheads.

So the question remains: should you buy into it? A Yahoo Canada Shine editor gave the product line a whirl, and here's what she had to say:

Pros:

A little goes a long way: The Daily Cleansing Foam ($28) serves as a cleanser and toner, and I believe it. The foam was light and I didn’t feel the need to intensely lather it up on my skin, which meant a little went a long way. After rinsing, my skin felt surprisingly clean and refreshed.

It's sun-safe: The Balancing Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 15 ($35) offers UBA/UVB protection – something you shouldn’t forget even as winter is looming. While it claims to be non-greasy, like every other moisturizer with SPF in it, there is a slight greasy look. But you’re going to powder your nose anyway, aren’t you?

Cons:

Cost: The whole Pore Reform regimen rings in at more than $150. You decide what’s an appropriate cost for a skincare regimen, but it seems pretty costly to me.

Smell: The T-Zone Pore Refining Serum ($42) has a strong chemical smell and a filmy application. That’s enough for me to conclude that I don’t see myself using this product anymore.

It's a tough sell: The Blackhead & Pore clearing duo ($49.50) is a nice little luxury, but who really sees blackheads disappear just after using a clay mask? I’ll stick with my $5 drug store mask instead.

The verdict:

People take years to perfect their personalized skincare regimen, so it’ll be hard for these products with so-so results to infiltrate anyone’s starting line. After using all of these products for four weeks, the only one I can actually say I'll continue using is the Balancing Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 15.
