Bad boys more appealing to women at a certain times of the month, study shows

Are you one of those women who are attracted guys that are so wrong for you? The ones who cheat and lie, but they're so smooth they somehow get away with it?

Well, a new study out of the University of Texas at San Antonio, recently published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, has an explanation, and apparently your hormones that are to blame.

"Previous research has shown in the week near ovulation, women become attracted to sexy, rebellious and handsome men like George Clooney or James Bond," says researcher Kristina Durante to LiveScience. "But until now it was unclear why women would ever think it's wise to pursue long-term relationships with these kinds of men."

As part of the study, a group of female participants, at both high and low periods of fertility, were required to look at online dating profiles of men who were either "sexy" or "reliable". They were then asked to describe how dependable they thought the man would be as a father if they were to have a child together -- taking into consideration caring for the hypothetical child, grocery shopping, cooking and cleaning.

Surprise, surprise, the women who were at the peak of their fertility cycle were more optimistic that the good-looking, bad boy would contribute to family life than the women who were not ovulating at the time, reports LiveScience.

"Under the hormonal influence of ovulation, women delude themselves into thinking that the sexy, bad boys will become devoted partners and better dads," explains Durante. "When looking at the sexy cad through ovulation goggles, Mr. Wrong looked exactly like Mr. Right."

According to Jezebel, the findings were further confirmed by a second experiment where women at different stages of their fertility cycle were required to socialize with actors playing either the reliable father or the handsome jerk. Again, the ovulating women were drawn to Mr. Wrong.

"Interestingly, women in this experiment said the sexy guy would contribute more to childcare only if he was her baby daddy, but not if he was shacked up with some other lady," reports Jezebel.

While there's no doubt these findings are interesting, will they actually cause women to second-guess their romantic relationships during that time of the month?
