Anti-gay note left on restaurant receipt might be fake

The story of a waitress who said she was denied a tip because she is gay is being disputed by the family she served at Gallop Asian Bistro in Bridgewater, N.J.

Dayna Morels, a former U.S. Marine, made international headlines a couple weeks ago when she posted a receipt on Facebook that showed a family's restaurant bill for $93.55 with a hateful message: "I'm sorry but I cannot tip because I don't agree with your lifestyle and how you live your life."

Yet in a bizarre twist to the story, the family in question stepped forward this week claiming that not only did they leave Morels a tip, but they fully support gay rights and gay marriage.

"Never would a message like that come from us," the husband, who wishes to remain anonymous, tells NBC.

The husband and wife showed the news station a receipt that looked identical to the one Morels posted, but it had an $18.00 tip. They also provided a copy of what they say is their Visa bill, which appears to show charges for the meal plus the tip, for a total of $111.55.

However, the manager and restaurant owner at Gallop Asian Bistro insist they have the original bill showing a $93.55 charge. They did not provide a copy to NBC.

The wife believes Morels may have misinterpreted her actions as homophobic when they were not.

She explains that the hostess told them their server's name was "Dan," and when Morales appeared at their table, the wife exclaimed "Whoa, you're not Dan."

Yet Morales, while relaying the story online, interpreted the wife's statement as anti-gay.

"I introduce myself and tell them my name is Dayna," Morales writes. "The mom proceeds to look at me and say[s], 'Oh I thought you were gonna say your name is Dan. You sure surprised us!'"
