Alaskan company creates just-add-water beer concentrate

An Alaskan beverage company, Pat’s Backcountry Beverages, has created a just-add-water beer concentrate using a lightweight carbonation system. The product is scheduled to hit Canadian and American store shelves in September.

That's right, for those of you positively fed up with lugging heavy bottles of warm beer to picnics, camp sites, cottages or BBQs, simply pack a few sachets of concentrate and the company's portable carbonator bottle, and you can make your own beer.

It uses a similar fermentation process to regular beer and, according to the company, it is the most environmentally friendly brew you can drink.

"Unlike other concentrate processes, this is not just about making the beer and then removing the water afterwards, which is extremely energy inefficient," reads the company website.

"Instead, our process allows us to start with almost no water, and carefully control the environment of the fermentation. The result… concentrated beer with all the same great taste you’re used to in a premium micro brew. All you do is add water, carbonate, and enjoy."

Sounds plausible, right? But the verdict is still out on the taste. So far, no reputable media has taste-tested the beer concentrate, so you will just have to rely on the company's word.

The carbonator bottle costs $29.95 and each sachet makes one pint of beer. There will be two available brews: pale ale and black ale. Thirsty drinkers will need to buy the carbon activation powder, needed to carbonate each drink.

Would you consider trying a just-add-water beer? Even if only for convenience while outdoors?
