2015 Awards Season style awards

On Sunday night, those coveted little golden statues were awarded to those who achieved excellence in some form of filmmaking. But, as always, the night was equally huge for those in the fashion industry -- and anyone who appreciate a good red carpet showing.

The stars, for the most part, didn’t disappoint when it came to red carpet style. As usual, someone made a statement, someone underwhelmed, someone shocked -- and then there was Jimmy Kimmel, who looked as though he was just strolling by on his way to The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf.

Now that award season is more or less over and we’ve seen enough six figure dresses to last us til next year, we devised our own light-hearted red carpet style awards to cap things off. And no, unfortunately our “awards” don’t come with a statute or a $5,000 goodie bag.

Best Dressed Female: Emma Stone

The award has to go to Emma Stone, seemingly the only person who walked the Oscars red carpet in something that wasn't white, nude or blush. The stunning redhead chose not to play it safe in a sparkly chartreuse gown by Elie Saab. Stone, who was nominated for Best Supporting Actress, always seems to show up in a somewhat offbeat outfit and rarely misses the mark, as her sparkly Lanvin jumpsuit at the Golden Globes demonstrated. At January's SAG Awards, she walked the red carpet in a unique tuxedo jacket layered over a sheer dress (both by Dior). She stands out in a sea of form-fitting gowns, and for that, she deserves a nod for her successful style risks.

Most Improved: Rosamund Pike

We hate to pick on a woman who just had a baby, but the beautiful Rosamund Pike completely missed the mark at her first big award show of the season. The “Gone Girl” actress showed up to the Golden Globes in an unflattering silk confection by Vera Wang. Her next red carpet gown at the SAG Awards fared slightly better, but was still lacking. She wore a black architectural tent dress with a high low hemline by Christian Dior Haute Couture. Pike finally did herself justice at the Oscars in a figure-flattering Givenchy Haute Couture dress with heavy embroidery and satin detailing that accentuated her tiny waist.

Biggest Risk Taker: Keira Knightley

We’re going to give this award to the demure Keira Knightley, who never quite blends into the crowd. She may not be wearing any meat dresses on the red carpet a la Lady Gaga, but the actress always enjoys tempting the fashion critics with a dresses that are definitely not like the others. Her 2015 Golden Globes dress featured tiers of lace and bug print fabric, courtesy of Chanel. She also accessorized with a gigantic butterfly ring for added whimsy. Earlier this month, the mom-to-be walked the BAFTA red carpet in an intricate Giambattista Valli dress. Her Oscars dress was an ethereal confection by Valentino in one of the evening’s most popular colours: nude. However, Knightley ensured her version stood out with embroidered flowers and script.

Biggest Statement Maker: Lady Gaga

While Keira Knightley is off taking fashion risks, a certain someone is out there completely changing the face of fashion. Lady Gaga is that person. The quirky performer will always be remembered for her out-there red carpet looks. While she toned it down for Grammys in a revealing beaded Brandon Maxwell gown, she brought her game right back up for the Oscars in a custom Azzedine Alaïa white ballgown with red gloves that somehow managed to overshadow the dress. Her sheer Oscars after-party gown (also designed by Azzedine Alaïa) made just as much of a sartorial statement.

In a sea of black tuxedos and white pocket squares, it was easy to spot those men who opted for colour. We’re going to give the best dressed man award to David Oyelowo, who stepped out on the Oscars red carpet wearing a red Dolce and Gabbana three-piece tuxedo with a shawl lapel and fun jeweled brooch. Common, who brought everyone to tears alongside John Legend gets second place, sporting a white bowtie and navy velvet blazer from Prada.
