105-year-old woman says bacon is the secret to a long life

What's the secret to long life? According to 105 year-old Texas resident Pearl Cantrell, it's bacon.

Because...you know...who cares about medical science! When you live to 105 you are allowed to make all manner of outrageous medical claims and no one will bother to challenge you -- not even the "evidence-based medicine" camp who go after Dr. Oz and his dubious claims.

Cantrell eats bacon everyday and is proud of it.

"I want other people to eat bacon, I tell them to. My kids all eat it," she tells local news station Big Country. "I don’t feel as old as I am, that’s all I can say.”

The Abilene, Texas resident recently celebrated her birthday over three days with more than 200 guests at the schoolhouse she attended as a child.

When meat company Oscar Mayer found out how much Cantrell loves bacon, they sent one of its Wienermobiles to her home to wish her a happy birthday, along with a huge case of bacon.

Cantrell has outlived three of her seven children and survived the loss of her husband. Her children claim she never complains, nor thinks about dying.

"She's taught us to work hard and to get up every morning and think about living," says daughter Anno.

But Cantrel's claims about bacon being the elixir of life might not hold up in Japan where the oldest living man and woman are known to live, and bacon is rarely consumed.

Jiroemon Kimura from Japan celebrated his 116th birthday last month and is believed to be the last known man to have lived across three centuries.

And Misao Okawa also from Japan celebrated her 114th birthday in February.
